Haiti Project tells of devastation in Jeannette, Haiti

Devastation in Jeannette, Haiti -- by Heidi Ropa (Haiti Project Coordinator)

I am writing this on October 19th as I am about to leave for Haiti. The Village of Jeannette, Haiti on the southern peninsula was devastated by Hurricane Matthew.  Family gardens and crops were washed away, homes demolished, livestock killed and trees bearing avocados, mangoes and breadfruit were uprooted.

Together with Father Andy Jones, I have been in ongoing conversations with our partners in Jeannette.  A medical team from Eau Claire is currently in Jeannette working with a Haitian doctor hurricane relief funds made possible.  Your generous donations have been put to good use buying food relief for the community and guaranteeing school lunch through June 2017 with funds that have come in so far.  Heidi will meet with the St. Marc's Relief Committee this weekend in Jeannette, Haiti to hear their plans for rebuilding in the community.

The Haiti Project is collaborating with another non-profit whose work will focus on disseminating mini-grants to farmers to buy seeds because this month is black bean planting season.  These grants can also be applied toward the purchase of livestock.

Thank you for responding to the Bishop's appeal for hurricane relief by demonstrating the true meaning of partnership with your generosity.

    Your sister in Christ,

Heidi Ropa (Episcopal Diocese of Milwaukee Haiti Project Coordinator)
