The Role of the Bishop

"A bishop in God's holy Church is called to be one with the apostles in proclaiming Christ's resurrection and interpreting the Gospel, and to testify to Christ's sovereignty as Lord of lords and King of kings.

You are called to guard the faith, unity, and discipline of the Church; to celebrate and to provide for the administration of the sacraments of the New Covenant; to ordain priests and deacons and to join in ordaining bishops; and to be in all things a faithful pastor and wholesome example for the
entire flock of Christ."  (Book of Common Prayer, page 517)  So reads a portion of the service for the Ordination of a Bishop in the Book of Common Prayer.

While the day to day work of a bishop is broader than what is outlined above, the apostolic role of the bishop is well defined by it.  All bishops are ordained to serve the entire church, and thus the bishop's work involves immediate oversight of a given diocese, they are also expected to be active participants in the church on a provincial, national, and international level.

It is the bishop's responsibility to serve as the chief pastor of a diocese, and this is signified by the bishop's prerogative to preside and preach at any service at which he is present in his capacity as bishop.  On a daily and weekly basis in the Diocese of Milwaukee, Bishop Miller visits parishes to lead services and to teach, seeks to cast and share a vision for the work of the Diocese, oversees the work of the diocesan staff, chairs meetings of the Executive Council, participates in ecumenical and inter-faith groups, appoints members of a variety of diocesan commissions and bodies, serves as the primary pastor to the clergy, and sits ex officio on a number of boards related to the ministry of the Diocese of Milwaukee, and the Episcopal Church.  Bishop Miller is currently the co-chair of the Episcopal-Moravian Dialogue, and serves as a member of the House of Bishop's Theology Committee.

You can find more information about our bishop's role in the diocesan constitution and canons, found on our Governance page.
