In the Diocese of Milwaukee, all ordained candidates for parish positions are required to undergo a background check conducted by the Oxford Document company. Such a check will include a check of criminal, credit, and driving records, as well as compilation of information from previous employers, both in the church and beyond. The background checks are normally conducted on those candidates identified in a search process as ‘finalists’, and is generated by contacting the Canon to the Ordinary with the name and current address of each candidate. All such checks are conducted on a confidential basis.

Such checks are also available for lay persons, and may be required according to the Diocesan Policy on the Prevention of Sexual Misconduct. The cost of each check is billed to the Diocese. The parish requesting the search will be invoiced for reimbursement by the Diocesan Finance Officer.
