The Commission on Mission and Development oversees funds to congregations for mission churches and congregational projects. There are two approval bodies Mission and Development gives recommendations to:
1.) Trustees for the Meachem Grants and
2.) Executive Council for Convention approval.
Funding sources can seem confusing and Mission and Development with the Finance Committee and Trustees of Funds and Endowments have put together a chart as a starting point in discovering the types of resources available and when to apply. Please click here to view this chart.
To clarify the Meachem Funds. This is an opportunity for congregations to submit a request for funds for service or formation projests, for training purposes, mission trips or help in support of a parish nurse. It is imporant to understand the disbursement process so projects can be planned accordingly. The application is available late fall with a mid February due date. The Commission on Mission and Development along with the Trustees Grants Board reviews the application and gives approval in February or early March. Once approved it must to to Executive Council for approval and then on the the Trustees for final approval. The disbursement date is in May and a check for the amount granted is sent from the Trustees. The spring time is a good time to do some planning and preparing for the fall application. What types of grants have been awarded, well here is a story from St. Andrews' in Monroe.
I am excited to report that St. Andrew's Monroe held a very successful grief and mourning seminar entitled "Good Grief" on the 24th and 25th of February. A total of twenty-five people attended either our two-hour afternoon session on Wednesday or our hour and one half session on Thursday evening, both of which were held in the community meeting rooms of two local banks. A key emphasis of Mission and Development is helping to create a learning environment in our congregations and Diocese. Training events and raising up new leadership is an ongoing goal.
