The Ministry of All Baptized Persons

Jesus invites all of us into ministry.  All baptized persons are agents of God’s mission. In the Episcopal Church, we re-commit ourselves to proclaiming the good news in thought, word and deed, seeking and serving Christ in all persons, striving for justice and truth and preserving the dignity of every human being at every baptism.

Our ongoing reaffirmation of our baptismal covenant has driven a shift in the way we do things.  Our historic mandate of discerning the call to ministry has shifted from saying "yes" or "no" to Holy Orders to discerning the call to ministry of all baptized persons by the community of the faithful.  The process for discerning the specific Call to Holy Orders has shifted from a private or semi-private process with a priest followed by a small committee of parishioners, to the discernment of the community of the faithful

This process of discernment is carried out through individual prayer and study, with family and friends, with the community of the faithful, and in the case of discerning a specific call to Holy Orders, with the Bishop, the Commission on Ministry and the Standing Committee.

The Commission on Ministry has created a resource to support all baptized persons to intentionally discern, and act on, their call to ministry using and seeking ways to use the gifts given to them in service to God; and to support congregations of baptized persons to actively and intentionally carry on their responsibility to recognize affirm and enable their individual members in their ministries of daily living. Congregational discernment of the ministry of all of the baptized empowers all the laos – lay and ordained – to be more intentional in their daily lives, and releases the church to become the staging and equipping ground for that work, not the focus of it.
