Description of Courses offered by the Center for Faith and Discipleship:

 

Pentateuch and Prophets

An introduction to the history, literature, and theology of the Old Testament with primary focus on the Pentateuch and former prophets.

 

Psalms, Wisdom, and Apocalyptic

A continuation of Old Testament 1 with primary focus on The Psalms, Prophets, Wisdom, and Apocalyptic.

 

Eye Witness Accounts

An introduction to the history, literature, and theology of the four gospels, and the Acts of the Apostles.

 

Letters and Visions

A survey of the Epistles, and Revelations as witnesses to the life and faith development of the early church.

 

The Patristic Church

A survey of Christian history from the Apostolic Fathers through the early middle ages.

 

The Medieval Church

A survey of Christian Church history in the middle ages in both east and west leading to the eve of the reformation.

 

The Reformation Church 

A survey of the history of the reformation with special emphasis on the history of the Church of England and the development of the Anglican communion.

 

The Modern Church 

A survey of Church History from the reformation to modern times with special emphasis on the developments within the Anglican Communion and the establishment of the Episcopal Church in America. Attention will also be paid to the history of ecumenical relationships between the Anglican communion and other Christian denominations

 

 

 

 

 

 

Historical Theology

An introduction to the historical and philosophical developments of Christian theology from the second century through the enlightenment.

 

 

Systematic Theology

An introduction to classical Christian doctrines and the doing of theology.

 

Anglican Theology

The Anglican understanding of Christian life and faith will be explored with special attention paid to major Anglican theologians.

 

Ethical and Moral Theology

An introduction to foundations of a Christian moral life. Special attention will be paid to a contemporary Anglican approach.

 

Pastoral Theology

 

Liturgical Theology

An exploration of the origin and development of liturgical practices with special emphasis on the Book of Common Prayer.

 

Liturgical Practicum

A practical course designed to equip students to serve pastorally and liturgically the rites of the Book of Common Prayer.

 

Principles of Preaching

An introduction to the craft of sermon preparation and delivery. The significance of preaching, the importance of exegetical research, and the value of image, story, and metaphor in proclaiming the Gospel are emphasized. Students do a number practical exercises to develop the different skills necessary for good preaching

 

Preaching Practicum

An intensive laboratory experience in the preparation and delivery of sermons. Students are encouraged to develop their preaching skills in a variety of different homiletical formats and liturgical contexts.

 

Spiritual Tradition

An introduction and exploration of Christian spirituality as the integration of theological understanding, faith, and practice through the exploration of classical texts as well as the introduction to practices of prayer.

 

 

Contemporary Society

This course is partly an exploration of the context in which the Gospel of Jesus Christ must be preached today as well as a practicum in which the ministries of the diocese will be experienced allowing reflection upon being a faithful witness to Jesus Christ in a contemporary context.
